High school students from around the world are invited to participate in a creative and collaborative Artist Trading Card (ATC) Exchange! Artist Trading Cards are small, original artworks measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches—about the size of a playing card—that can be made using any materials or techniques, from drawing and painting to collage, mixed media, or digital art. This exchange is open to all students, whether or not they are enrolled in an art class.

Week 1 – Introduction & Inspiration

  • Introduce the Artist Trading Card (ATC) format: 2.5 x 3.5 inches, open media, and artist-to-artist exchange tradition.

  • Share examples and discuss the purpose: creativity, personal expression, and global connection.

  • Brainstorm themes or prompts (e.g., identity, environment, daily life, dreams, abstraction).

  • Begin initial sketches or concepts.

  • Optional: Mini-lessons on composition, mixed media techniques, or visual storytelling.

Week 2 – Creation & Refinement

  • Begin creating final ATCs (aim for 3–5 cards per student, depending on group size).

  • Explore a variety of media and encourage artistic risk-taking.

  • Offer peer feedback and opportunities for revision.

  • Begin writing short artist statements or reflection notes (optional).

  • Prepare final touches: name, date, and school info on back of cards.

Week 3 – Finalization & Mailing

  • Complete all ATCs and accompanying materials (artist statements, class list, group photo, etc.).

  • Package cards for mailing.

  • Send completed sets to international partner schools by the end of the week.

  • Optional: Students document or photograph their own cards before mailing for digital archiving or sharing.

Week 4 – Reception, Unboxing & Critique

  • Receive incoming cards from partner school(s).

  • Host a filmed or live unboxing event (virtual or recorded).

  • Facilitate a shared critique or reflection session with partner students (live video call, recorded video, or email exchange).

  • Discuss observations: cultural insights, creative techniques, favorite cards, surprises.

  • Celebrate the exchange: display received cards in a classroom gallery or bulletin board.
