Why Languages Matter: Getting Curious About the World
Students share what languages they know or have heard, discuss why people learn different languages, and each choose one language they're curious about. The teacher introduces the partner class and explains that both groups will explore languages together.
Deep Dive: Research Your Chosen Language
Students research their chosen language using provided guides and digital tools, gathering information about where it's spoken, why it's interesting, and basic expressions. They create a research note or simple document to organize their findings.
Create Your Language Introduction
In small groups, students design a multimedia presentation (poster, slides, or short video) that introduces their language, explains why they want to learn it, and shows 5-10 basic expressions with pronunciation and meaning.
Live Exchange: Meet the Partner Class and Share Languages
Students join a video call with the partner class, present their language introductions, and listen to peers from the other classroom present theirs. They ask questions and note similarities and differences in the languages and reasons for learning them.
Compare and Reflect: What Makes Languages Worth Learning?
After the exchange, students review notes from both their own and the partner class's presentations, identify patterns in why languages matter, and create a comparison chart or infographic showing what they learned about different languages and communication styles.
Showcase and Celebrate: Language Fair Presentation
Students present their language introductions to the whole class and reflect on what they discovered about global communication, cultural diversity, and their own learning goals. They celebrate the languages explored by both classrooms and discuss which new languages they might want to learn next.
