Culture Without Borders: Sharing Stories and Building Bridges

Students explore what culture means and create a personal 'passport' highlighting one key element of their own country's culture, such as a traditional story, festival, or famous place. They share their passports in small groups to build excitement and familiarity before connecting with the partner class.

Students research their chosen cultural element in depth, gathering information about its history, significance, and how it reflects their community's values. They create a simple multimedia document, poster, or written description with photos or drawings to prepare for sharing with the partner class.

Students present their cultural research to the international partner class in a live video call, sharing their passports and answering questions. Partners listen actively, ask questions to deepen understanding, and share initial observations about similarities and differences between cultures.

After the video exchange, students analyze what they learned about both their own and the partner class's culture. They create a comparison chart or concept map showing common themes, unique traditions, and how different cultures express similar values in different ways.

Students work in small mixed teams (combining members from both classes, either in person or asynchronously) to co-create a project that weaves together cultural elements from multiple countries, such as a hybrid story, a fusion artwork, a combined game, or a multicultural celebration plan. Teams communicate asynchronously through shared documents or forums to coordinate ideas and decisions.

Teams present their blended cultural projects to both classes, explaining how they combined traditions and what they learned about collaboration across cultures. Students then reflect individually on how their understanding of culture has grown and what surprised them about working with international peers.
