Light Up Our Streets: Building Automatic Street Lights with Global Partners

¿De qué trata este proyecto?

Student teams build a light-sensor circuit and program a mBlock script that switches a model street light on at dusk and off at dawn. They present and test their prototypes with partner classes, then refine their designs based on feedback.
Edad de los estudiantes
9-12 años
Duración del proyecto

Mes de inicio
Noviembre 2026

Este proyecto contribuye a los siguientes objetivos globales

Objetivos de aprendizaje

Students will be able to identify the people affected by night-time darkness in their community and describe how a street light helps them.
Recordar / Comprender
Students will be able to use a light sensor and mBlock script to build a working automatic street light that switches on at dusk and off at dawn.
Aplicar
Students will be able to compare their street light prototype with partner classes' designs and analyze which sensor and code choices work best in different conditions.
Analizar
Students will be able to evaluate their prototype's performance during partner class testing and judge which feedback will improve reliability and energy saving.
Evaluar
Students will be able to design and refine an improved automatic street light solution, combining partner feedback with their own creative ideas to meet a community need.

Actividades del proyecto

1

Spot the Dark: Who Needs Light in Our Community?

Students investigate the importance of street lighting in their communities. They identify areas where street lights are needed, observe unnecessary electricity usage and discuss how poor lighting affects pedestrians, cyclists and road users. They share their observations, photographs and findings with partner classrooms and compare local challenges.

Duración: 30 minutos
2

Build, Test, and Share: Automatic Street Light Prototypes

Students work in teams to design and build an Automatic Street Light Controller using electrical circuits and light sensors. They develop a simple program using mBlock to automatically switch the model street light ON when the surroundings become dark and OFF when sufficient daylight is available. Students test their prototypes under different lighting conditions, identify problems and improve their designs. They exchange photographs, circuit diagrams and programming ideas with international partner classrooms.

Duración: 150 minutos
3

Final Showcase and Reflection with the Partner Class

Student teams present their completed prototypes to partner classrooms through presentations or recorded videos. They demonstrate how their automatic street lights work, explain the science behind their designs and discuss how their solutions can reduce unnecessary electricity consumption. Students exchange constructive feedback and reflect on their learning and improvements.
