English Words Around the World

Students explore how English is used in their local community by collecting everyday words, phrases, and signs they encounter. They discuss why certain words or spellings are common where they live and share initial observations about English variation.

Students systematically gather 10-15 English words or phrases from their community, noting how they are spelled, pronounced, and used. They create a simple record (photo, note, or sketch) of each word and prepare to share with the partner class.

Students share their collected words with the partner classroom through the Class2Class platform and receive the partner class's collection in return. They work in small groups to compare spellings, pronunciations, and meanings, identifying patterns and regional differences.

Students create a visual comparison chart or infographic showing how selected English words differ between their community and the partner class, explaining possible reasons for the variations (history, culture, local influence). They prepare brief written or recorded explanations of their findings.

Each group presents one or two word variations to the class, explaining what they learned about how English changes across regions. Students reflect on how this activity helped them understand English diversity and appreciate different ways of using the language.
