Curiosity Across Cultures: Questions That Connect Us

Students take a guided walk around their classroom, home, or school grounds and notice something that makes them curious. They draw or write down what they see and ask one or two questions about how or why it works, then share their observations with classmates in small groups to see what different children noticed.

Students learn what makes a good question by exploring examples and non-examples. They practice asking 'how' and 'why' questions about everyday things (toys, plants, food, weather, animals) through partner interviews and group discussions, building confidence in their questioning skills.

Over two weeks, students keep a simple observation journal or photo collection of things in their daily lives that make them curious (meals, animals, weather, machines, people, nature). They write or draw one observation and one question for each item, then share their collections with a partner to spot patterns in what different children wonder about.

Students present their top three observations and questions to a partner class in a live video call, then listen as the partner class shares theirs. Together, they notice which observations are similar across both classrooms and which are different, discussing why daily life might be the same or different in each community.

After the video exchange, students work in small mixed groups (if possible, with partner-class students via follow-up video or asynchronous collaboration) to sort and compare the observations and questions they collected. They create a simple chart or visual showing what was noticed in both classrooms, what was unique to each, and what patterns they see in how children think and ask questions.

Students reflect on what they learned about asking good questions and how observing the world helps us think like scientists. They share one thing they discovered about their own curiosity and one thing they learned from the partner class, then celebrate what makes each classroom's observations special. This can be a short presentation, a group discussion, or a simple reflection drawing.
