Accent Detectives: Exploring English Phonetics Globally

Students explore the basics of English phonetics through guided listening and discussion. They listen to examples of how the same words sound in different English accents (British, American, Australian, etc.) and begin noticing which sounds vary most across regions.

Students record themselves pronouncing individual phonemes and common words using simple audio tools, then listen back and compare their pronunciation to native speaker examples. They identify which sounds feel natural and which ones are challenging, keeping notes on patterns they observe.

Students participate in a scheduled video call with the partner class to share their audio recordings, listen to how peers from another country pronounce the same sounds, and discuss the accent differences they notice. They ask questions and exchange observations about what makes certain sounds harder or easier.
