What Drives El Niño? Comparing Evidence Across Two Regions
What is this project about?
Students analyze trade wind changes, sea surface temperature data, and ocean warming patterns to evaluate which factors most strongly cause El Niño events. They then compare their findings with data collected by international classmates from another ...

This project contributes to the following global goals
Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to identify the main drivers of El Niño, including trade wind changes, sea surface temperature shifts, and ocean warming patterns, in their region.
Remember / Understand
Students will be able to apply trade wind, sea surface temperature, and ocean warming data to examine how El Niño develops, while collaborating with international classmates on shared analysis.
Apply
Students will be able to compare their regional El Niño data with findings from partner classrooms in another region, identifying differences and similarities in driving factors.
Analyze
Students will be able to evaluate which factors most strongly cause El Niño events, justifying their conclusions through joint reflection with international peers.

Project Activities
1
Kick-off: What Is El Niño and Who Is Our Partner Class?
Students get a short introduction to El Niño and meet their international partner class to agree on shared goals and how they will compare data.
Duration: 30 minutes
2
Analyze Regional Drivers: Trade Winds, Sea Temperatures and Ocean Warming
In pairs, students study trade wind, sea surface temperature and ocean warming data for their region to see how El Niño develops and which factors seem strongest.
Duration: 100 minutes
3
Compare Findings with the Partner Class and Reflect Together
Students share their regional data with the partner class, note similarities and differences, and jointly decide which factors most strongly cause El Niño.
Duration: 50 minutes
4
Present Conclusions and Reflect on Shared Learning
Each team presents its evidence-based conclusion to the partner class and reflects on what they learned about global connections and collaboration.
Duration: 60 minutes
