Pollution Detectives: From Polluted Cities to Green Solutions

Age of Students
9-12 years
Project Duration
4 weeks
Starting Month
August 2026

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to identify and describe how pollution from cars, factories, and waste affects their local community and compare these observations with findings shared by partner classrooms internationally.

Project Activities

1

Pollution Detective: Exploring Our City

Students explore what pollution is by watching short videos, discussing how it affects their community, and taking a guided walk or virtual tour to spot pollution sources (cars, factories, litter, smoke). They record observations and take photos to build a personal evidence collection.

Duration: 30 minutes
2

Mapping Pollution & Building a Model City

Working in small groups, students research one type of pollution (air, water, soil, noise, or plastic), gather images and facts, then collaborate to build a cardboard model of a polluted city with factories, cars, and waste. Each group labels their pollution sources and prepares a short explanation of how their type affects the community.

Duration: 120 minutes
3

Sharing Solutions with Our Partner Class

Students design and add green solutions to their polluted city model (solar panels, electric cars, recycling, green spaces) and create a simple comparison showing before and after. They exchange photos and findings with the partner class, review their peers' solutions, and give feedback on what works best.

Duration: 60 minutes
4

Presenting Our Green City & Making a Pledge

Each group presents their polluted and green city models, explaining the problems they found and the solutions they built. The class writes and signs an eco-friendly pledge, reflecting on what they learned and what they will do to protect the Earth.

Duration: 30 minutes
