Patient-Centred Clinic Prototypes: Local Care Gaps, Global Solutions

What is this project about?

Student teams design a practical improvement for clinic or hospital care, such as a simple check-in or referral tool, based on their evidence. They test prototypes with staff and partner classes, then refine their designs using the feedback they rece...

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to identify and describe patient-centred care gaps in their local clinic or hospital, drawing on evidence gathered with partner classrooms.
Remember / Understand
Students will be able to apply human-centred design methods, such as patient interviews and journey mapping, to collect and organise evidence from clinic staff and patients.
Apply
Students will be able to analyze and compare clinic check-in and referral processes across local and partner settings, identifying root causes of delays and friction for patients.
Analyze
Students will be able to evaluate prototype feedback from staff and international partner classes, judging which design features best improve patient experience and are feasible for scaling.
Evaluate
Students will be able to design and iteratively refine a practical, sustainable patient-centred check-in or referral prototype that addresses an identified clinic need.

Project Activities

1

Kick-off video call and clinic walk-through with the partner class

Students meet their partner class by video, introduce their local clinic or hospital, and agree on shared goals and how they will work together. Each team shares a short tour or description of the care setting they know best.

Duration: 240 minutes
2

Patient and staff evidence gathering with interviews and journey mapping

Teams interview patients and clinic staff about check-in and referral experiences, then map the patient journey step by step. They compare findings with the partner class to spot gaps, delays, and friction points.

Duration: 6,000 minutes
Delivery: Empathy Map
3

Root cause analysis of check-in and referral delays

Students analyse their evidence and compare local and partner processes to find the root causes of delays and patient frustration. They agree on one clear care gap to solve and explain why it matters.

Duration: 5,000 minutes
Delivery: Comparative Chart
4

Co-design and build a first prototype

Teams brainstorm solutions and build a simple, low-cost check-in or referral prototype that addresses their chosen gap. They keep it practical and sustainable so it could realistically be used in a clinic.

Duration: 12,000 minutes
Delivery: Prototype
5

Test prototypes with staff and partner class feedback rounds

Teams test their prototypes with clinic staff and the partner class, collecting structured feedback on patient experience and feasibility. They judge which features work best and note what needs to change.

Duration: 9,000 minutes
Delivery: Peer Feedback Form
6

Iterate and refine the prototype into a scalable solution

Using the feedback, teams redesign and improve their prototype, then write an action plan showing how it could be adopted and scaled in clinics. They test the refined version again with a small group of users.

Duration: 10,000 minutes
Delivery: Action Plan Document
7

Final showcase with partner class and clinic stakeholders

Teams present their final prototypes, evidence, and impact case to the partner class and clinic stakeholders in a live video session. They reflect together on what they learned about patient-centred care and cross-cultural teamwork.

Duration: 240 minutes
Delivery: Exhibition or Showcase
