Math and Physics in Modern Devices

What is this project about?

Students explore everyday technology devices in their homes and classrooms, identifying the math concepts (angles, ratios, measurements) and physics principles (forces, energy, motion) that make them work. They share their discoveries with a partner ...

Age of Students
13-15 years
Project Duration
3 weeks
Starting Month
September 2026

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to identify and describe math and physics principles in everyday technology devices while explaining how these devices differ across cultures through intercultural dialogue with partner classrooms.

Remember / Understand

Students will be able to apply critical thinking to compare scientific concepts in modern devices across regions and collaborate with international peers to demonstrate how cultural contexts influence technology innovation and usage.

Project Activities

1

Tech Around Us: Exploring Devices in Our World

Students take photos and notes on 2-3 everyday devices in their home or classroom, identifying the math concepts (angles, measurements, ratios) and physics principles (forces, energy, motion) that make each one work. They prepare a short written or visual summary of their findings to share with the partner class.

Duration: 45 minutes
2

Deep Dive: Math and Physics in Technology

Students research their chosen devices in more detail, using videos, diagrams, and simple explanations to understand how the math and physics principles actually function. They create a detailed analysis sheet or infographic showing the connection between the scientific principle and the device's purpose, then post it to a shared forum for the partner class to review.

Duration: 115 minutes
Delivery: Infographic
3

Global Device Exchange and Comparison

Students review the partner class's device analyses and participate in an asynchronous forum discussion comparing which devices are most common in each region and why. They consider how cultural contexts, climate, resources, and daily life influence which technologies are invented and used in different places, asking each other questions and sharing observations.

Duration: 85 minutes
4

Innovation Challenge: Redesign or Invent

Working in small groups, students choose one device from their region or the partner class's region and brainstorm how they could improve it using the math and physics principles they've learned. They sketch a prototype or create a proposal explaining the change, the scientific reasoning behind it, and how it might be different if designed for the partner class's context.

Duration: 75 minutes
Delivery: Prototype
5

Showcase and Reflect: Technology Across Cultures

Students present their innovation ideas and reflections on what they learned about how math, physics, and culture shape technology. They discuss how working with the partner class changed their understanding of everyday devices and share one key insight about the relationship between science and culture.

Duration: 40 minutes
Delivery: Slides Presentation
