Investigating How Our Designs Work

What is this project about?

Students analyze how their plank car models move, testing which shapes, weights, and wheel sizes perform best and recording the results. They exchange findings with partner classes and evaluate which design choices would work in different communities...
Age of Students
13-15 years
Project Duration
4 weeks
Starting Month
December 2026

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to identify the design features of their plank car models, such as shape, weight, and wheel size, and report them to partner classes.
Remember / Understand
Students will be able to use controlled tests to demonstrate how shape, weight, and wheel size affect their plank car's movement, recording results collaboratively with peers.
Apply
Students will be able to compare and contrast their test results with partner classes' findings to differentiate which design choices perform best under different conditions.
Analyze
Students will be able to evaluate which plank car design choices would work best in different communities around the world, justifying their decisions with evidence from shared data.

Project Activities

1

Meet the partner class and launch the car challenge

Students introduce themselves and their communities to the partner class through a video call, then see their plank car models and learn about the investigation goals.

Duration: 60 minutes
2

Build, test, and record how shape, weight, and wheels affect movement

In small teams, students change one design feature at a time, run controlled roll tests, and record distances and times in a shared data table with the partner class.

Duration: 180 minutes
3

Compare findings with the partner class and analyze patterns

Students review both classes' data together, identify which design choices performed best under different conditions, and explain why they think the results happened.

Duration: 150 minutes
4

Adapt designs for communities around the world

Teams choose a community profile, such as a rainy mountain town or a dusty city street, and decide which plank car design choices would work best there, using evidence from the shared data.

Duration: 150 minutes
5

Present findings and recommendations to the partner class

Teams share their test results, community recommendations, and reflections on what they learned about working across cultures during a joint showcase.

Duration: 90 minutes
