Global Pen Pals and Vocabulary Exchange

Students introduce themselves through a short letter or email to their partner class, sharing their name, interests, local context, and one question they want to ask their pen pal. This icebreaker sets the tone for respectful, authentic correspondence and helps both classes get to know each other before diving into deeper exchanges.

Students and their pen pals co-create a vocabulary journal by exchanging 5-10 academic or professional English words each week, explaining how the words are used in their local context and comparing usage across cultures. They document entries in a shared digital or paper format, noting cultural differences in meaning and application.

Students participate in a live video call with their partner class to practice spoken English, ask follow-up questions about each other's cultures, and discuss the vocabulary they've been collecting. This real-time interaction deepens relationships and gives students authentic practice in intercultural communication.

Students read and analyze letters or emails from their pen pals in which the partners defend a stand on a local issue or cultural practice. Students identify the arguments, evidence, and reasoning used, then write a thoughtful response that either agrees, disagrees, or adds new perspective, practicing critical thinking and respectful debate.

In small groups, students draft an academic letter or short essay comparing a cultural practice or value from their context with their pen pal's context. Peers review each draft for clarity, evidence, and intercultural sensitivity, and students revise based on feedback before sending to their partner class.
