Skills to develop
Project Activities
What Heals Us? Local Foods and Remedies Discovery
Students share and discuss traditional foods and natural remedies from their own families and communities, exploring why these matter culturally and what they know about how they work. This icebreaker introduces the topic and builds excitement for connecting with partner classes.
Research and Document Your Community's Healing Foods
Students interview family members, research local traditional foods and remedies, and document them with photos, recipes, descriptions, and cultural context. They prepare materials to share with the partner class, focusing on both cultural significance and any scientific properties they can identify or hypothesize.
Exchange and Compare Across Cultures
Students view and analyze the partner class's submissions, identify patterns and differences in how cultures use foods and plants for healing, and engage in structured peer feedback and questions using a shared digital forum or collaborative document. They reflect on what surprised them and what connections they notice.
Build a Shared Digital Gallery and Reflection
Working together asynchronously or in a live session, students organize the combined submissions into a shared digital gallery with categories (by ingredient, by health benefit, by culture, etc.) and add captions that explain the science behind the healing properties. They write personal reflections on what they learned about intercultural approaches to food and medicine.
Showcase Learning and Celebrate Global Connections
Students present the shared gallery to their school community, reflect on how their understanding of food, medicine, and culture has grown, and discuss what they would like to learn next about global healing practices. They celebrate the collaboration and the diversity of knowledge represented.
