Ecosystem Guardians: Designing Local Conservation Solutions with Global Partners

What is this project about?

Students design and build a practical conservation solution for their local ecosystem, such as a pollinator garden model or a waste-reduction campaign, and present their prototype to partner classes for feedback. They refine their design using the in...

9-12 years, 13-15 years
Project Duration
5 weeks
Starting Month
November 2026

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to identify key threats to their local ecosystem and describe how they connect to global environmental challenges shared with partner classes.
Remember / Understand
Students will be able to apply ecosystem science and geography knowledge to demonstrate how a pollinator garden or waste-reduction model supports local biodiversity.
Apply
Students will be able to compare conservation approaches from their community with those of partner classrooms, analyzing differences in context, resources, and impact.
Analyze
Students will be able to evaluate their prototype using peer feedback and measured data, judging its effectiveness and feasibility for their local context.
Evaluate
Students will be able to design and refine an innovative conservation action plan, incorporating international suggestions, that addresses a specific ecosystem challenge in their community.

Project Activities

1

Kick-off: Meet Our Partner Class and Map Our Ecosystem

Students meet the partner class by video, form mixed-country teams, and introduce their local ecosystem with a simple map and labelled food web. Teams agree on shared research questions.

Duration: 90 minutes
2

Investigate Biodiversity and Litter on Our School Grounds

Teams run a safe biodiversity survey and litter audit using a shared tally sheet and the same categories as the partner class. They share their data and discuss differences in what they found.

Duration: 150 minutes
3

Research Threats, Compare Conservation Efforts, and Design a Solution

Students find credible sources on conservation in their ecosystem, compare threats and efforts with partner classes, and choose one shared issue. They draft a practical, measurable action such as a pollinator garden or waste-reduction model and refine it using peer feedback.

Duration: 240 minutes
4

Share Our Prototypes and Sign the One Earth Pledge

Teams co-present their prototypes, data, and infographics to the partner class in a joint exhibition. Each team writes a short reflection and the classes agree on a shared student-led pledge.

Duration: 120 minutes
