Designing a Science Solution Together

What is this project about?

Small international teams design a simple, low-cost tool or model that applies chemistry, biology, or physics to a local problem, such as water filtration or a solar-powered device made from paper and cardboard. They build a prototype, test it, and d...

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to identify a local problem, such as water access or energy use, and describe how chemistry, biology, or physics principles relate to it.
Remember / Understand
Students will be able to use basic science principles to demonstrate how a simple low-cost prototype, such as a water filter or paper solar device, works during team testing.
Apply
Students will be able to compare their prototype's test results with those of partner class teams, analyzing differences in design choices and local conditions.
Analyze
Students will be able to evaluate their prototype's performance using agreed criteria and partner class feedback, judging its effectiveness for their local context.
Evaluate
Students will be able to design and revise an improved low-cost science solution with their international team and present it live to the partner class.

Project Activities

1

Meet the Partner Class and Spot a Local Problem

Students introduce themselves and their community, then share a local water or energy challenge they notice at home. Teams are formed across both classes to start the project.

Duration: 90 minutes
2

Explore the Science Behind the Problem

Teams research how chemistry, biology, or physics principles relate to their chosen local problem and sketch simple ideas for a low-cost prototype. They compare their findings with partner team ideas in a shared online board.

Duration: 210 minutes
3

Build and Test the First Prototype

Teams build a simple water filter or paper solar device from low-cost materials and test it against agreed criteria. They record results, note what works and what does not, and share photos with their partner team.

Duration: 360 minutes
4

Compare Results and Gather Partner Feedback

Teams compare their test results with partner class teams, discussing differences in design and local conditions. They give and receive written feedback to decide what to improve.

Duration: 240 minutes
5

Revise and Improve the Prototype

Teams redesign and rebuild an improved version based on feedback and new test data. They retest it and document the changes they made and why.

Duration: 240 minutes
6

Live Demonstration and Reflection Video Call

Teams demonstrate their improved prototype live to the partner class during a video call and explain the science behind it. Students then reflect together on teamwork, feedback, and what they learned about each other's realities.

Duration: 150 minutes
7

Interview a Local Expert or Family Member About the Problem

Students interview a local expert, family member, or community member about the local problem and how people currently deal with it. They share the answers with their international team to guide the next design steps.

Duration: 60 minutes
Delivery: Interview
