Designing a Pattern with a Formula

What is this project about?

Student teams create their own repeating pattern or tessellation governed by a formula they devise, then build it on paper or in a simple digital tool. They send their designs to the partner class for feedback and refine their formula based on the re...
Age of Students

Project Duration
3 weeks
Starting Month
December 2026

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to identify the repeating shapes and patterns they see in tiles, fabric, and local buildings in their community.
Remember / Understand
Students will be able to use a simple formula to generate a repeating tessellation on paper or in a basic digital tool.
Apply
Students will be able to compare their pattern formulas with those of the partner class and analyze how each rule changes the final design.
Analyze
Students will be able to evaluate partner class feedback and judge which formula revisions will improve their tessellation's accuracy and visual impact.
Evaluate
Students will be able to design and refine an original tessellation governed by their own formula, incorporating international feedback to create a new pattern.

Project Activities

1

Spot Patterns Around Us

Students explore tiles, fabric, and buildings in their community and photograph or sketch the repeating shapes they find. They share these with the partner class to start comparing local patterns.

Duration: 45 minutes
2

Design a Formula and Build Your Tessellation

Teams invent a simple rule for a repeating pattern, then build the tessellation on paper or in a basic digital tool. They test whether the formula produces a clean, repeating design.

Duration: 120 minutes
3

Exchange Designs and Compare Formulas

Teams send their tessellations and formulas to the partner class and give feedback on each other's designs. They compare how different rules change the final look and note what works best.

Duration: 90 minutes
4

Refine Your Formula Using Partner Feedback

Teams study the feedback they received, decide which formula changes will improve accuracy and visual impact, and rebuild their tessellation. They create a new, improved version of their original pattern.

Duration: 105 minutes
5

Showcase Our Patterns and Formulas

Teams present their final tessellation, explain their formula, and share how partner feedback shaped their changes. The partner class joins a short video call to see the results and respond.
