Designing a Community Solution Together
What is this project about?
Student teams design a low-tech, sustainable solution to one local challenge using paper, sketches, or simple materials. They present their prototype during a live video call and refine it with feedback from the partner class.
- Age of Students
- 13-15 years, 18+ years
- Project Duration
- 3 weeks
- Starting Month
- November 2026

Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to identify a real local challenge in their community and describe its causes and effects using sketches or simple notes.
Remember / Understand
Students will be able to apply a sustainability criterion to select a low-tech material set and use it to build a paper or simple-materials prototype of their solution.
Apply
Students will be able to analyze partner-class feedback during a live video call and compare how their local challenge differs from those in other communities.
Analyze
Students will be able to evaluate their prototype against sustainability and community needs criteria and judge which refinements would most improve its impact.
Evaluate
Students will be able to design and refine an innovative, low-tech sustainable solution that integrates international peer feedback and addresses a specific local challenge.

Project Activities
1
Meet the partner class and map our local challenges
Students introduce themselves and their community to the partner class, then sketch and list one real local challenge with its causes and effects.
Duration: 45 minutes
2
Design and build a low-tech sustainable prototype
In teams, students pick a sustainable material set using paper, sketches, or simple materials, then build a prototype of their solution to the local challenge.
Duration: 150 minutes
3
Compare challenges and refine using partner feedback
Students compare their local challenge with the partner class's, gather feedback during a live video call, and decide which refinements would most improve their prototype.
Duration: 90 minutes
4
Present the final prototype in a live video call
Teams present their refined prototype to the partner class during a live video call, then reflect on how the feedback changed their solution.
Duration: 75 minutes
