Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to describe the recycling challenges in their community and identify the key waste streams that the partner class also faces.
Remember / Understand
Students will be able to apply a sorting framework and collection criteria to map current recycling practices and locate gaps in their local context.
Apply
Students will be able to compare recycling approaches from their community with those shared by the partner class, analyzing which strategies transfer across different contexts.
Analyze
Students will be able to evaluate the feasibility and impact of their prototype recycling solution using peer feedback from the live exchange with the partner class.
Evaluate
Students will be able to design and refine an innovative, low-cost recycling improvement, such as a poster campaign or sorting guide, incorporating feedback from international peers.

Project Activities

1

Kick-off video call and community recycling challenges

Students meet the partner class on a live video call to introduce themselves and their neighborhoods. Together they name the main recycling challenges and waste streams both communities face.

Duration: 120 minutes
2

Map local recycling practices and find gaps

Students use a simple sorting framework and collection criteria to map how recycling works in their community. They mark the gaps they find and write down which waste streams are being missed.

Duration: 480 minutes
3

Compare approaches with the partner class

Students review recycling approaches shared by the partner class and compare them with their own. In pairs, they note which strategies could transfer to their community and why.

Duration: 420 minutes
4

Design a low-cost recycling prototype

Working in small teams, students design an innovative, low-cost improvement such as a poster campaign, sorting guide, or simple collection idea. They sketch and build a first version of their prototype.

Duration: 720 minutes
5

Live prototype exchange and peer feedback

Teams present their prototypes to the partner class during a live video exchange. Each team gathers feedback on feasibility and impact, then records what needs to change.

Duration: 240 minutes
6

Refine prototypes and final showcase

Students use the international feedback to refine and improve their prototypes. They then present the final solutions in a showcase and reflect on what they learned about global and local recycling.

Duration: 360 minutes
