Cone Garden Kickoff: Our Setup and Growing Stories
Students photograph and document their own cone garden setup, including soil, seeds, location, and current growth stage. They prepare a short 2-3 minute personal introduction video or voice-over explaining their garden, what they planted, and what they hope to learn about food security and farming in their community.
Live Exchange: Comparing Gardens Across Borders
Students join a scheduled video call with the partner class to share their cone garden observations, ask questions about growing conditions, climate, soil, water access, and local farming practices. They take notes on key differences and similarities they discover during the conversation.
Document and Observe: Photo Journal of Growth Stages
Over 2-3 weeks, students photograph their cone gardens at regular intervals (weekly or bi-weekly), recording observations about plant height, leaf development, weather challenges, and any pests or problems. They write brief captions noting date, growth stage, and what they notice changing.
Analyze and Compare: Create a Visual Comparison Chart
Students work in small groups to organize their observations and the partner class's data into a simple visual comparison chart showing how cone gardens differ across the two locations in terms of climate, soil quality, water availability, growth timeline, challenges faced, and food security potential. They highlight insights about how local conditions shape farming success.
Reflect and Present: Food Security and Global Farming
Students present their comparison chart and key findings to the class, reflecting on what they learned about how cone gardening addresses food security differently in their community versus the partner location. They discuss how collaboration with peers across borders helped them think more deeply about farming, sustainability, and peace through agriculture.
