Project Activities
Introducing Language and Voice Across Cultures
Students read a short unseen text together, discuss what they notice about how the writer uses language to express ideas, and share initial reactions. The class then meets the partner class via video to introduce themselves, exchange brief personal stories about communication, and preview the text they'll analyze together.
Close Reading and Language Analysis
Students analyze the unseen text in small groups, identifying specific language techniques (imagery, tone, word choice, structure) and explaining how these techniques communicate the writer's ideas and experiences. Each group prepares notes and examples to share with the partner class.
Comparing Interpretations with Partner Class
Each group presents their analysis via a recorded video or live video call, explaining which language techniques they found most important and why. Students from the partner class ask questions and share how their own cultural background shaped their reading of the same text. Both classes take notes on similarities and differences in interpretation.
Creating and Exchanging Original Writing
Using the shared theme from the unseen text, students write a short descriptive or narrative piece (300-400 words) that reflects their own ideas and cultural perspective. They exchange their work with the partner class asynchronously, read each other's pieces, and provide constructive written feedback on how well the language choices communicate meaning to an international reader.
Reflecting on Language, Culture, and Connection
Students review the feedback they received and reflect in writing on how their language choices were understood (or misunderstood) by readers from a different background. They present key insights about how cultural context shapes communication and discuss what they learned about connecting with an international audience through language.
